Gettie G. Whitmire, 64 Years Old Indian, Had Lived In Indian Territory Entire Life
Gettie G. Whitmire was born in Going Snake district, Indian Territory, January 4, 1871. He died on April 17, 1935 at the age of 64 years, 3 months and 13 days.
Mr. Whitmire was educated in the public schools of the Cherokee National Male Seminary near Tahlequah. He was married to Miss Lydia Walkingstick in September 1899. To this union was born four children, three boys and one girls, of whom two boys Vance and Haskell, and the daughter, Mrs. Golda Webb, survive; and were present at the funeral.
The wife and one child preceded him in death by several years.
He was a kind husband and father, and honest citizen and a good neighbor. He was very public spirited, always trying to further the cause of education in the community and had served on the school beard of district 34 for a number of years before his death.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. I.M. Phillips of Westville and a Cherokee preacher, Rev. Wm. Wolf, and old friend of the deceased. The funeral was attended by the largest crowd that has gathered at the Whitmire cemetery in many years.
Mr. Whitmire leaves one sister and one brother both of whom attended the funeral; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.
