PORT BARRE - Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Grimmett, 87, will be held today at 10 a.m. in the Port Barre United Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Clark will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park of Opelousas.

Mr. Grimmett died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his residence. He was a native of Many and resident of Port Barre. He retired as the co-owner and operator of Sam Grimmett Inc. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a retired farmer, the former mayor of Port Barre, serving for 12 years, a member of the Port Barre United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Club, Farm Bureau and Lion's Club. He also played semi-pro baseball for the Opelousas Indians and played for the Port Barre Oilers, which he later managed.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Veneita Ryder Grimmett of Port Barre; two sons, Bradley Grimmett and wife, Blanche, of Krotz Springs and Chris Grimmett and wife, Missy, of Port Barre; five daughters, Mary Alice Aucoin and husband, Rudy, of Houma, June Nezat and husband, Ralph, of Port Barre, Susie Edward and husband, Michael J., of Krotz Springs, Kathy Moreau and husband, Lanny, of Leonville, and Charlotte Tate and husband, Ted, of Port Barre; one brother, Buddy Grimmett of Sterlington; two sisters, Mae Rourks of Port Barre and Louise Grimmett of Bastrop; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Delores Ann Grimmett; his parents, Sam and Lydia Hickman Grimmett; three sisters, Iva Estis, Lucille Hardy and Eloise Thompson and one brother, Harvey Grimmett.

Visiting hours were observed from noon to 10 p.m. Monday and will be observed from 6 a.m. today until time of services in Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Methodist Church, MacDonell Children's Home, 8326 Main St., Houma, LA 70363.

Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre is in charge of arrangements.
