|Birth: ||Dec. 10, 1963, Ethiopia|
|Death: ||Nov. 3, 2008|
Born in Sekota, Ethiopia, Mengistu Wassihun (WAS-ih-hoon) died November 3, 2008 of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Denver, Colorado.
According to Ethiopia: a Post-Cold War African State by Theodore M. Vestal, Mr. Wassihun was a member of EHRCO, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council as a member of its legal committee. Members of this legal group were murdered in suspicious ways, and he fled the country after threats were made on his life by TPLF (Tigrayan People's Liberation Front) security forces.
Mengistu always hoped for Ethopia's betterment in democracy. He was described as "a good person who had a vision for our country, a vision of a country where people can live in freedom and harmony without suppression, strife or conflict. His efforts to realize this vision came in the form of activities aimed at consolidating our unity and serving our community, all in addition to the activities and obligations in his personal life."
In 2004, Mr. Wassihun signed a petition for freedom of the press in his home country, noting "Freedom of the press is one of the core values in a democratic society. Any measure designed to curb that fundamental right amounts to the unsuccessful resistance of civilization."
Educated at Addis Ababa University, University of Oslo and University of Denver's Sturm College of Law, his LinkedIn profile summary describes him as a "General practitioner attorney with substantial legal experience in legal research and analysis. High premium on providing preemptive legal support in Amharic and/or English. Focus on international law, human rights, international business planning, corporate social responsibility, alternative dispute resolutions, intellectual property and contract drafting and negotiation. Extra curricular activity in community-based organization, instituion setup and capacity building."
Mengistu left behind a wife, Tsehaye Chekol, and was father of Tewadros, Marcos and Lucas Mengistu, all of Denver. Services were held November 09, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Ethiopian Orthodox Church, 6250 E. Colfax Avenue, Aurora, CO.
