Mary Linnie Martin was born November 19, 1886, in Walkersville, Frederick County, Maryland, daughter of Rev. William Landers Martin and Emma Alice Sigmund Martin. On January 1, 1908, she and Henry Maynard Freeze went to Hagerstown and were quietly married by Rev. A. M. Evers. Marriage notice for Henry Maynard Freeze and Mary Linnie Martin from "The Mail", the newspaper of Hagerstown, Maryland, January 3, 1908:

"Miss Mary L. Martin and Henry M. Frieze (sic), both of Thurmont, were married New Year's day at the residence of and by Rev. A. M. Evers in this city."
[note by G. Freese: I wondered for a long time why my grandparents ran off to Hagerstown and weren't married by my grandmother's father, Rev. William Landers Martin, who was a United Brethren Minister. I finally realized that Rev. A. M. Evers was the minister who baptized my grandmother and perhaps she was especially close to him growing up. Orperhaps her parents didn't approve of their getting married.]
