Catharine Ann Horton was born December 19, 1811, in Baltimore, Maryland, the 2nd of 6 children of James Henry and Elizabeth Diffenderffer Horton. She was the granddaughter of James and Alice Munro Horton, as well as Peter and Catharina Myers Diffenderffer. On August 20, 1835, in Baltimore, she married Nicholas Merryman Parrish, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Johnson Parrish. They were the parents of 9 children: William James (died young), Elizabeth Horton, Emma Katherine, Henry Maynard, Eugene Walter, Edgar Merryman, James Horton, Gertrude Horton and Clara Eliza Parrish. There might have been a 10th child who also died young, Smith Parrish. Catharine passed away March 5, 1886, in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, and was buried on the 6th in Weller's Church Cemetery there.

"Married on Thursday evening last by the Rev. Wm. Hamilton, Nicholas Merryman Parrish, to Miss Catharine Ann Horton, eldest daughter of Capt. James Horton of this city."

"DEATH OF MRS. N. M. PARRISH. --This esteemed lady died at her residence on Carroll Street, this place, on Friday last of pneumonia. She had been an invalid for years and had recently suffered from hemorhage of the lungs. Her remains were interred in the Hill Cemetery, the funeral services were conducted by Revs. A. B. Stoner and W. C. Wire at Trinity Reformed Church. The maiden name of the deceased was Catharine Ann Horton, daughter of Capt. Horton who commanded the 1st Light Hussars at the defense of Baltimore in 1812. Mr. N. M. Parrish and Miss Catharine A. Horton were married in Baltimore in 1835, fifty-one years ago, when they came to reside in this county and had held continuous residence here during their married life. Mrs. Parrish was the mother of ten children, seven of whom are living but three of whom were able to be present at the funeral. The age of the deceased was 74 years, 2 months, and 14 days."
