PEKIN ~ Thurman Vernando Reinertson, 83, of Pekin, passed away at 2 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006 at his residence. A Pekin resident since 2001, he was formerly of Forman, ND.
Born September 20, 1922 in Astoria, SD to Lars and Minnie (Bergjord) Reinertson, he married Rose Marie Bajt on December 28, 1946 in Indianapolis, IN. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Dr. Eric V. (Betty) Reinertson of Pekin; two granddaughters, Kristin B. Reinertson and Courtney B. Reinertson, both of Pekin; two brothers, Odean Reinertson and Leon (Mary) Reinertson, both of Forman and four sisters, Verna Nelson of Havana, ND, Stella (Harold) Olsen of Britton, SD, Evelyn (Robert) Thymian of Laramie, WY and Phyllis Carpenter of Forman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Parvell, Wallace, Lester and Dallas Reinertson and three sisters, Adelade Ellsworth, Gloria Pittner and Mora Lipps.
He graduated from high school in 1941 at Britton, SD.
A World War II Army veteran and a recipient of the Bronze Star, Thurman served from March 10, 1943 to January 4, 1946 in the European Theater, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. He was a charter member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association, a life member of Roy L. King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1232 in Pekin and a 46-year member of American Legion Post 191 in Forman, ND.
Thurman worked as a tool engineer for Clark Equipment Company, formerly Melroe, retiring in 1982 after 15 years of service. The company is now known as Ingersoll-Rand. He had previously worked for McDonald Douglas Corp. in California and farmed near Havana, ND.
He was a member of Pekin Lodge 29, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and also El Zagel Temple, Shrine in Fargo, SD.
He was an avid golfer and woodworker. Following retirement, he worked as a golf superintendent in Forman, ND until 1998.
He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pekin. He was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Astoria, SD.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2006 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pekin. The Rev. Paul D. Balaban will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, with Masonic rites at 4 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before services Monday at the church.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2006 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and the Macon County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, 4722 North Sheridan Road, Peoria, IL 61614.
