Jim was born in Summer Shade, on March 20, 1927. He married Lois Jean Ferring on June 10, 1950. Jim served in Europe, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Viet Nam and retired in 1970. He received the Korean Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal and several lesser awards.
During his 18 years in Berea, Jim was a member of Union Church, where he served on the Mission board, Pastoral Relations Committee, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and was elected Honorary Lifetime Deacon.
Jim was an active citizen in his community, participating in Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Students for Appalachia tutoring, volunteer work at Berea Public Library and St. Joseph Hospital Berea. He believed deeply in the goal of decent, affordable housing for all and was a tireless advocate for Habitat for Humanity.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years Lois; a daughter, Vicki (Alan) Brashear of Somerset; sons, Mark (Lisa) Morgan of New York City, Wes (Lanette) Morgan of Midway; sisters, Arlene McMurtrey of Summer Shade, and Frances Franklin of New Albany, Ind. He was a beloved grandfather to Matthew Brashear, Michael Brashear, Rachel Morgan, Hannah Morgan, Jessica Morgan, Jonathon Morgan, Carter Morgan and Alexander Morgan.
Interment will follow immediately after the service at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with full military honors.
