Jesse Hiscock was a millwright and also operated the sawmill for a number of years. He was known as a man of character, respected for his many virtues, and called to fill places of trust.

He moved to Tyngtown (now Wilton) from Damariscotta, Maine around 1810. He had a brief war experience in 1814, being a private in a company of the Massachusetts militia in Wilton, commanded by Captain Charles Morse. This company was in the regiment of infantry commanded by Lt. David McGaffey and called into service for coastal defense at Hallowell in the War of 1812. Later, Jesse was elected Captain of the same company of militia.
