Sylvia Learned Gates, widow of the late Arthur Owen Gates, died this morning in a local hospital. Mrs. Gates was born March 27, 1897 in Sheldon, N.D. She came to Pacific Grove in 1905, attended local schools and graduated from San Jose State College. She taught school for a short time in Salt Lake City, Utah, before returning to GP to make her home. Her late husband, Arthur Owen Gates, who died in 1965, was the owner and president of the old Security State Bank in Pacific Grove.
Mrs. Gates is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lt. Col. And Mrs. C.L. Razey of Pacific Grove and Hawaii, and a son, James Millspaugh of Pacific Grove. She is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Miriam L. Braswell of Pebble Beach, Mrs. Lola Rourke of Houston, Tex., Mrs. R.W.
(Marjory) Crary of Bethesda, Md., Mrs. Walter (Floy) Berge of Carmel, Mrs. Stanley R. (Beth) Maveety of Eugene, Ore., and four grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Paul Mortuary with Chaplain George Lutz of the United Methodist Church of Pacific Grove officiating. Burial will be in the El Carmelo Cemetery.
Those wishing to make contributions in the memory of Mrs. Gates should make them either to the Central Mission Trails Heart Association, or to the United Methodist Church in Pacific Grove. Paul Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
