Donald Edwin Dean, born in the family home in Pacific Grove, Calif., Feb. 13, 1926. Died Beverly Healthcare Center, Monterey, of complications of cancer, July 12, 1998. Don grew up in and attended Pacific Grove schools, graduating from high school in 1945. He was drafted right into the Army and trained at Camp Roberts and Fort Ord. As he started up the troop ship Pantarosa APA (9) gangplank in August of 1945 toward the invastion of Japan, the news boys were selling papers that day about an "Atomic Bomb destroys Hiroshima." It was August 7, 1945. Following WWII he graduated from Hartnell College and San Jose State Collge as a Mechanical Engineer and Musician. The majority of his work career was in the Los Angeles, San Pedro area. He designed and built many different machines, from a high speed printing press for Life Magazine to hot metal forming presses used to construct airplane wings. He held several patents on machines he designed as well as SECRET Security Clearance. A lifelong musician playing the trombone, he often performed with the Steart Family in the opening heralding of the Carmel Bach Festival. He formed his own Big Band band of twenty plus players and worked the dance and entertainment circuits of Southern California for decades. He has been a guest artist with notables such as Stan Kenton's Band. A serious interest in photography led to a professional side career and his photo collection includes over 5,000 photographs of jazz musicians in the era of the late 1940s to date. His photos have been published the world over. An active sailing enthusist, from the days when he rowed the Sprague Glass Bottom Bots at the Pacific Grove Beach, he helped form several Yacht Clubs in Southern California and taught navigation. Following retirement Mr. Dean returned to the Pacific Graove family home and has been busy as a Docent for the Central Coast Lighthouse Keepers. He is survived by: son, Steven Craig Dean, of Maggie Valley, North Carolina; a daughter, Michelle Dean Poehlmann of Richmond, CA; and a grandson, Thomas; a sister Olive Dean Hyler of Pebble Beach; an aunt of Morgan Hill; as well as cousins and a long-time companion, Marilyn Kimberly of Pacific Grove.
