Frances Chaney
Birth: Jul. 23, 1915
Odessa
Odes'ka, Ukraine
Death: Nov. 23, 2004
Manhattan
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA

Radio and televison actress. Her budding movie career died when she was blacklisted along with 10 other Hollywood actors who were jailed in 1950 for contempt of Congress upon refusing to answer whether they were Communists. After years appearing on popular radio series like Topper, Gangbusters and Mr. District Attorney she became unemployed. She had advanced her radio work into a few screen parts before the blacklisting prevented her job opportunities; she was able, however, to land parts in Off-Broadway and Broadway plays, including understudy roles for Maureen Stapleton, Kim Stanley and Claudette Colbert. When the effects of the blacklistfinally faded, she was an established stage actress. In the 1960s, she appeared in a recurring role as Jeanne Culpepper on the soap opera The Edge of Night. Most recently she had brief film appearances in "When Harry Met Sally" (1989)and as Mrs. Cantrell in "Life with Mickey" (1993). Born Fanya Lipetz on July 23, 1915, in Odessa, Ukraine, she emigrated to the Bronx with her parents. Died in Manhattan, New York of natural causes. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
