Staff Sgt. David P. Nowaczyk, 32, of Dyer, Ind., died April 15, in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was attacked with an enemy improvised explosive device. Nowaczyk was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He is survived by his wife: Rachel; one daughter: Kilery; step-son, Conner Reese; his parents: Andrew (Patti) Nowaczyk of Dyer; maternal grandmother, Delilah Weddington; one sister, Megan Smart; a niece, Abby; and nephew; Aiden. Funeral services will be conducted by McCoy Funeral Chapel, Hammond, Wednesday May 2, 2012 directly from St. Thomas More Church, 8501 Calumet Ave., Munster, IN, Mass at 10:00 AM with Rev. Michael J. Yadron officiating. Interment, Memory Lanes Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends may meet with his family Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the church. David was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, CO. He was awarded two Bronze Star medals for bravery and a Purple Heart. An expression of sympathy may be given in the name of David Nowaczyk Memorial Fund at any BMO Harris Bank in lieu of flowers. "He gave the greatest sacrifice he could for people he didn't even know."
