10/29/1850: Married to Elizabeth Thomas in Granville Co., NC.
John was born and reared in Roxboro, Person Co., NC. As an adult, he followed farming and merchandising in NC until 1857.
In 1857, John and his cousin, William Pressley Bumpass, II, with their wives, both being Thomas girls, and one or two children each, migrated to Farmersville, Collin Co., TX, where they engaged in farming and stock-raising. He bought land south of Farmersville, where he farmed and raised stock.

7/31/1862: enlisted in the Confederate Army at Farmersville, TX. During the Civil War he was captain of a company of Martin's Battalion of Mounted Volunteers.

After the war he moved his family to Terrell in Kaufman Co., TX. He was said to be a popular traveling salesman, a notable stump speaker, and a great joker. In the 1890's he was elected twice to the Texas Legislature.
Aleo Baptist Church and Cemetery - Collin Co., TX:
The church and cemetery are upon a hill five miles north of Nevada. This community was settled before Nevada was settled. This is where J. K. Bumpass, Lim Smith and other kinfolks settled in 1857. They were from Person County, N. C. Norwood had a gin a mile and a half east of Aleo in 1886. Aleo had a Post Office, a small store, a blacksmith shop, Taylor' s gin run by Coke Prater.
He was originally buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery on property he owned. In about 1902, he and other family members buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, were relocated to the J. E. Jones Vault, in the IOOF Cemetery, Farmersville, Collin Co., TX.
