Vidalia Advance
Vidalia, Georgia
Thursday November 1, 1928

Mr. Moses M. Coleman, age 77, died Monday evening at the New Vidalia Hospital, from injuries received when a truck belonging to the Darby Lumber Company, ran over him on the streets of Lyons Monday afternoon. Mr. Coleman was one of Toombs County's pioneer citizens...He moved to this county in 1896 from Emanuel County and entered the mercantile business...He built several stores in Lyons...including the Elberta Hotel...Mr. Coleman was born in the Edgefield district of South Carolina, now a part of Saluda County, in 1851...He married Miss Martha Youmans in 1880, she died in October last year. The family has suffered four tragedies, concluding with the accidental death of Mr. Coleman. A son, Tillman Coleman, was killed by lightning while visiting at home in 1906 when only 27 years old. Wade Coleman, 29 years old, was accidentally shot in his hardware store in Soperton while trying to sell a customer a pistol. Frank, a prominent dentist of Augusta, was trapped by fire in his home while sleeping and burned to death in 1923, when 29 years old. Mr. Coleman is survived by three sons, Butler of Savannah; Moses, Junior, and Gray of Lyons; two daughters, Mrs. Jim Gibbs, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Mrs. C. N. Rountree, of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; two brothers, Jeff Coleman, of Milton, Fla.; and Milton, of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. W. G. Wood, of Swainsboro; Mrs. G. H. Brown, of Garfield, Ga.; and Mrs. W. P. Rountree, of Summit, Ga.

NOTE: There are some mistakes in this article. Mr. Coleman's son who was the dentist in Augusta was M. Ferst Coleman, and the surviving son who was named as Gray should have been listed as Gary.

The above obituary from the Vidalia Advance can be found on microfilm or in the book, "Death Notices from the Vidalia Advance Newspaper 1921-1930 Vidalia, Georgia," compiled by Fred R. and Emilie K. Hartz.

The true death date for Moses M. Coleman is 1928, not 1929. The stone engraver made an error that was never corrected.
