Samuel Andrews
Birth: Feb. 10, 1836
Oaksey
Wiltshire, England
Death: Apr. 15, 1904
Atlantic City
Atlantic County
New Jersey, USA

Oil Magnate. He arrived in Cleveland from England in 1857, and later moved to New York. His chemistry abilities helped him to build Standard Oil Co. With a capital of $4000, he, John D Rockefeller and M B Clark became partners. His main work with Standard was in the refinery. He created the uses for the by products of oil which includes gasoline. In later years there was a falling out between Rockefeller and Andrews, and in 1874 Andrews sold his interest in the company to Rockefeller for $1 million. He used his fortune to build one of Cleveland's largest mansions (1885), nicknamed "Andrews' Folly" because of its poor design and costly maintenance. He abandoned the property in 1898 and died in a hotel suite in Atlantic City. (bio by: Mamaquilts)
