He was called Valentine all his life.
He was a son of Samuel Allen and Ellen Scales.
Valentine was a Freemason of very high rank.
Legend states that he traveled to Scotland to obtain a masonic degree.
According to his marriage record, his first name was William.
He joined Westley Chapel Methodist Church in 1867 with his mother-in-law, Margaret Sharp Martin.
They say that Valentines' clock stopped an hour before his death and that his watch stopped on the moment of his death.
Valentine and Elizabeth had at least three children:

Ella married James Hamilton (Ham) Cardwell on 9 Oct 1862.
Ella died on a train near Pine Hall on her way home to Stoneville, NC from Pinnacle on 27 Dec 1906.
"Ham" was b. ca.1841 and d. ca.1896.
They had 8 children.
Margaret J. Allen married Asariah G. Hooper on 18 Jan 1860. He was killed in the Civil War at a battle at Marion, VA. on 19 Dec 1864.
Asariah G. and Margaret Hooper had one child, Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) Hooper, b. 24 Nov 1860.
Margaret Allen Hooper remarried to Samuel B. Ziglar on 31 Mar 1868 and had at least three children, who were: Eva, Dora and Sam B. Ziglar.
