Beloved Uncle

"Uncle, a double blessing. You love like a parent and act like a friend." ~ Author Unknown

Percy Love was born and reared in the same small Louisiana town as my beloved Daddy. Though three years younger than Daddy, they were childhood chums and became best friends until Uncle Percy's death.
Uncle Percy grew up with the Stallings' children and later went on to date, fall in love, and marry one of Daddy's younger sisters, Willie Nell, whom Daddy adored. They had no children.
Uncle Percy had grand aspirations of becoming an attorney. He, as did the Stallings' siblings, taught school while going to college at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech University) in Ruston, Louisiana, graduating in 1935. After several years of law school, he decided law was too boring for him and changed his major to Business Administration. Soon after graduation, he was hired by the relatively new company, Bell Telephone (AT&T), the only employment he had after college graduation in his 55 year career. He retired in 1977 at the Chicago, Illinois office as one of its top administrators.
When I was a child, I looked so forward to Uncle Percy and Aunt Willie's visits to Louisiana. They were extra special people to Daddy and me. Too, selfishly, I knew they would always bring me many, many good books as gifts. Reading was my main source of indoor enjoyment, especially during the winter months when the weather was rainy and/or cold.
As soon as Aunt Willie retired from the University of Chicago, they purchased a huge lovely old home previously owned by a physician in Alexandria, Louisiana just 135 miles away from my little house in Shreveport. It was such a pleasure to be close to them after all those years of only seeing them at Christmas and family members' funerals.
Eight years before his loss, Uncle Percy complained about his right upper thigh causing deep pain, but thought it was due to his age. Once the pain became excruciating, Aunt Willie demanded that he go to their physician. He had a thirty-two pound tumor, though thankfully, benign, that took three hours of surgery to remove. That pretty much cured him from putting off seeing his doctor when he had future pain or ailments.
As with my father, Uncle Percy developed Alzheimer's and passed away with complications of the disease. His passing left a deep void in Daddy's and my lives, and certainly in the life of his beloved wife of fifty-one years. He's deeply loved and missed.

Many thanks to Ron Manley for the transfer of Uncle Percy's memorial to me.

I deeply appreciate the kindness and generosity of Marylee's sponsorship. Thank you so much! ❤❤
