Oral histories tell that this branch of the Sproles family were of Scots Irish ancestry and came to North Carolina from Tyrone County, Ireland, disembarking near Wilmington and settling along the PeeDee River in Richmond County. The surname is spelled variously in the early records as "Sprawls, Sprols, etc." but has generally become "Sproles" for that branch of the family that moved west from Richmond County. Solomon and Mary Ann lived on Mountain Creek in Richmond County. Tax records show he owned 1121 acres of land and the 1790 census shows William Bostick as a neighbor. Solomon had one daughter, Naomi (married Wm Bostick in 1791) and is believed to have had at least six sons, Sam, Elijah, Sol Jr., Alexander, Perry and Richard (1787-1845). After his death his estate was inventoried by Elijah in 1822 and in 1823 Solomon's son Richard was listed as administrator. After Soloman's widow, Mary Ann, died about 1830 the remaining family moved west.
