Birth: Jun. 22, 1821
Mount Vernon
Posey County
Indiana, USA
Death: Dec. 24, 1901
Gallatin County
Illinois, USA

William was the son of James and Rebecca (Givens) Duckworth and was born on the family farm which was located in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana in June of 1821. His parents were early settlers in southwestern Territory of Indiana in the early 1800s. On October 13, 1849 he married Mary Moore in Posey County. Mary was the daughter of Elihyu (Elisha) and Jane (Nesler) Moore and was born on October 14, 1831 in Posey County, Indiana. It is assumed she was related to the Moores who had established farms in the area in the early 1800s. The name of the cemetery where several of their children were buried most likely was named in honor of early Moore settlers in Posey County. In the 1850 Black Township U S Census William was listed as a "merchant." They had ten children: Harriet, Aaron, Thomas, Rebecca Jane, Margaret A., Mary Elizabeth, Soloman, Lawrence, Ella and Emma. Harriet, Thomas and Emma each died at an early age and were buried in Moore Cemetery which is located north of the town of Mount Vernon. William was a veteran of the Mexican War, but was excused from military service in the Civil War because he suffered from heart disease. In 1875 he moved with his family to Bear Creek Precinct in Gallatin County, Illinois. The Order of the Iron Hall was chartered in Omaha on August 13, 1886 and William was elected Previtt. In 1900 William was a widower living at the home of his son, Soloman, near Omaha, Illinois. Both William and his wife Mary passed away near Omaha, Gallatin County; William on December 24, 1901 and Mary on February 8, 1898. They are buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery which is just across the border in White County, Illinois.
