UPPER MARLBORO — Russell Myers, 82, of Upper Marlboro, went home to be with his Savior on Oct. 14, 2012 in Washington D.C.
Russ was born on Jan. 23, 1930 in Eckhart Mines, to the late Rance and Susannah Simpson Myers, formerly of Brierly Hill, United Kingdom. He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Myers.
After Russ graduated from Beall High School in 1948, he served in the United States Army Quartermaster Corps, stationed in Europe during the Korean campaign. After serving his country faithfully, he attended the University of Maryland, where he graduated in 1957 and moved on to an illustrious career with the Prince George's County School System. Teaching eager elementary school students was a passion he enjoyed for over 35 years.
Some of Russ' favorite activities were participating with his children in the "Boys and Girls Clubs", The Boys Scouts of America, and spending time with his dogs and cats. He loved sports. Russ was among the ardent fans at baseball, softball, volleyball and basketball games of his children and grandchildren. Passionate about the Washington and Baltimore professional teams, his last afternoon was spent watching the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Dallas Cowboys.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 59 years, Virginia Lee Jenkins Myers; twin sons, Eric Lee and his wife Lisa of Crofton, and Alan Lee and his wife Kathy of New Market; along with his beautiful daughter, Mary Jo (Jody) Cross and her husband Tim of Clemmons, N.C. Russ also is survived by five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Brett and Blake Myers, Zachary, Emma and Zoe Cross and Robert and Melissa Nunn. He leaves behind a sister, Eleanor Gay and her husband Glen and their children, Randal, Michael, Matthew and his wife Christy, of South Hill, Va. Among his many cousins, he is survived by Charlotte Burns of Sequin, Texas and Kathy Atkins of Fairport, N.Y. Close and dear friends that filled his life with laughter are Lew and Joyce Thomas.
Russ was a member of Eckhart Baptist Church of Eckhart, and of Riverdale Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro.
Friends and relatives will be received by the family at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service with Mr. Glen Gay officiating.
Interment will be at Maryland State Veteran's Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Military honors will be accorded by Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
