George and his brothers came from Germany as youth with their mother Mary Eckstein about 1855. They resided in Bond County Illinois prior to the Civil War. He served in the Civil War in the 82nd Illinois Infantry, Company H from September 1862 until mustered out in June 1865 in Washington, D.C. and he was listed as wounded. 1900 U S Census indicates marriage to Louisa with no other information about her. From 1909 he was married to Sarah A Williams who survived his death. No record has been found to 2016 of any children of this couple. A prior marriage to Emma Anderson in Texas in 1880 possibly resulted in a baby George deceased from croup at age 2 months in 1880.

After the War he was a member of the GAR post no 301 in Greenville.
