He was born April 5, 1922 in Red Wing, the son of Alf and Ellen (Soderholm) Nelson. He graduated in 1941 from Red Wing Central High School and then served in the US Navy during World War II. He returned to Red Wing and worked at LaGrange Shoe Factory and at Central Research. He married Delphine Issendorf on May 6, 1950 in Red Wing. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 and the Burnson-Lillyblad American Legion Post # 1218. He enjoyed ice skating and taught people to ice skate at South Park and Jefferson Park skating rinks, as well as participating in performances at the Bergwall Arena. He enjoyed woodworking and he was a very caring person who was always willing to help others.
Survivors include his wife, Delphine; two daughters, Debra (Wayne) Diercks of Rochester and Barbara (Steven) Miers of Inver Grove Heights and five grandsons, Scott and David Diercks, Brandon Nelson and Matthew and Eric Miers. He was preceded in death by one son, Brian, a twin brother, Harold (Betty) Nelson, a brother, Phillip (Shirley) Nelson, a sister, Phyllis Carlson and twin granddaughters.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday January 21, 2011 at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Belvidere. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or to Fairview Red Wing Area Hospice.
