Co. K, 18 Ala C.S.A

He was killed when he was hit by a canon ball during the siege of Spanish Fort near Mobile, Alabama one week before Lee surrendered at Appomattox.

Several other men also died. They were buried in a trench because the company was breaking camp. Francis Marion Bledsoe was buried in a separate grave by Will Lanning and Arch Stewart. At the last minute another man was brought for burial. The other man was buried facing east. Francis Marion Bledsoe was buried facing west, wrapped in a blanket with his cap covering his face. He was buried in this manner because Will knew Lousia Catherine Vincent Bledsoe would want her husband's body brought home for burial. Will Lanning returned in the fall of 1865. The body was recovered and brought home.

Will Lanning was married to Elizabeth Vincent. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Vincent Jr. She was the niece of Lousia Catherine Vincent, but they were close in age. Elizabeth's mother died when she was young. She was raised in the household of her grandparents.
