Capt. Sara M. Knutson Cullen, 27, of Eldersburg, Md. She was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Hunter Army Airfield, Ga. She died March 11, in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Sara was a 2003 graduate of Liberty High School who attended West Point to study law. Knutson married her husband, a former Black Hawk pilot, in November and was deployed in January. The website identifies her as Cpt. Sara M. (Knutson) Cullen. Her husband deployed with a private contracting company in February to Afghanistan. She was a 2003 graduate of Liberty High School. She studied law at West Point and was a member of the Judo team. She was previously stationed in Alaska and had one other deployment to Pakistan.
CPT Cullen was killed during a training mission aboard a UH-60 Black Hawk near Kandahar in Afghanistan. The NATO military coalition said in a statement that initial reports showed no enemy activity in the area at the time. The crash occurred during a heavy rainstorm in Daman district. A total of five soldiers were killed.
She was a Graduate of Liberty High School in 2003. At West Point she studied law, and was a member of the Judo team. She was previously stationed at Fort Wainwright in Alaska and had one other deployment to Pakistan on humanitarian mission. She married her husband (a former Black Hawk pilot) on November 17, 2012, and was deployed to Afghanistan in January of this year. Her husband deployed with a private contracting company in February to Afghanistan. He accompanied her body back to Dover AFB.
Her mother remembers her as an adventurous, fun loving young woman with a smile and a laugh that would light up a room. She loved to fly and proudly served her country.
She is survived by her husband, parents, brother, sister (a Major, US Army), her brother-in-law, and her nieces.
Born May 7, 1985, in Baltimore, MD she was the daughter of Bill and Lynn Brinkworth Knutson of Bluffton, SC. She was the wife of Christopher C. Cullen whom she married November 17, 2012.
Sara was a graduate of Liberty High School, Eldersburg, Class of 2003 where she had served as Vice-President of her class. She was a graduate of West Point, Class of 2007. Sara then pursued a career as an Aviation officer with the U.S. Army flying UH60 Black Hawk helicopters. She loved the challenge and developed a passion for flying. Sara was a very spirited, energetic individual with a variety of interests ranging from fashion and shopping to camping outdoors. She never finished dinner without enjoying dessert. She lived life to the fullest and never missed an opportunity for a new adventure.
Surviving in addition to her parents and husband are brother, Keith Knutson of New Castle, DE; sister and brother-in-law, Kelly and Brooke Bear of Silver Spring, MD; mother-in-law, Nancy Davis of Quincy, Mass; brother-in-law, Richard Cullen of Quincy, Mass; sisters-in-law: Cara Cullen of Braintree, Mass, Khiana Davis and Alessa Davis both of Quincy, Mass; and nieces, Sophia and Maggie Bear of Silver Spring, MD.

A funeral liturgy will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Community (915 Liberty Road) Eldersburg, MD. Interment will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
