Cyrus Spicer was born in Plainfield, N.Y., Jan. 9, 1819, and died Aug. 5, 1903, aged 84 years. When a young man he went to Chautauqua county, New York, where he lived for many years. In 1842 he was married to Miss Fidelia Smith. Two children were born to them, Weltha, wife of William Brewer, of Denmark, Iowa; William A., who resides in the state of Washington. In 1868 he moved with his family to Iowa and located at Fort Madison. Later he purchased property in Pleasant Ridge township, where he made his home for several years. From there he moved to West Point, where he remained until the death of his wife, which occurred in 1890. He afterward married Mrs. Susan Orton, of Augusta, Iowa. About ten years ago he came to Augusta and resided here to the time of his death. His father was a minister in the Methodist church and he was raised in that faith and was a member of that church. In politics he was a strong republican and cast his first vote for William Henry Harrison in 1840 in what was known as the whig party. Being patriotic and eager to serve his county, he volunteered for service in the civil war, on the 18th day of July, 1862, as a private in company F, regimenet 112, New York infantry and was discharged on July 1, 1865. His last sickness was protrated, he being an invalid for about three years. But his sufferings were borne with great patience and fortitude. He was a man of firm principle and upright character and highly respected by a large circle of friends. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in West Point Friday afternoon, Aug. 7, Rev. Alex Telfer officiating. The interment was in the City cemetery.
