George was the eldest son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Goings) Campbell. Like his father, he began an active life as a teacher, his example in this line being followed by his younger brothers. During the Civil War he served three years as a member of Company D, Eighty-Fourth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, being honorably discharged at the close of his term of enlistment, early in 1865. From that time until his death he made his home in Harrison Township, being engaged in carpentering and farming.
George was married to Sarah Amanda Snidow.
