David Albert Ottinger was murdered by his son in law, Mr Coker. It is said Mr Coker was an abusive husband and Mr Ottinger went to his house to see him and Mr Coker shot him. There was a trial.
David Albert Ottinger's obituary: from Mt Vernon Optic Herald dated 15 April 1921. Albert's death date April 06, 1921.
Last Tuesday night A.M. Ottinger received a message from Emory, Texas, saying his son Albert had been shot and was not expected to live. Mr. Ottinger and his son Bob left Tuesday night for Emory, arriving next day at 11 o'clock. Albert died a few hours later. Albert's daughter Cora married a man named Coker. They lived with Coker's parents. Her parents lived nearby. There had been hard feelings for several months between the families. They grew until Sunday, April 3, when Albert was going down the public road in front of the Coker home. Coker, his father and mother and brother ran out, stopping him and threatening his life. Cora warned her father no to come that way again as she was sure he would get hurt. Tuesday he decided to cut stove wood, but his crosscut saw was at his former house, and to get it he had to pass the Coker house. He asked one of his neighbors to go with him. As they neared the Coker house, the old man Coker ran out with a club ordering Albert to stop, yelling to his boy to bring the gun. The boy, who was Albert's son in law, ran out with a .38 Winchester and shot at Albert's heart, but hitting in the left side of the stomach. The old lady ran out hehind her boy screaming for him to kill Albert. Albert drew his pistol; but fired too late to save his life. The neighbor went for a hack and team and hauled Albert home. The doctor couldn't find the rifle ball, it having shot away a portion of the intestine, he slowly bled to death, living until the next afternoon. He was buried at Pilgrim's Rest near Emory. The old lady Coker is out on a thousand dollar bond and the two Cokers are in jail. Everybody in North Franklin knows Albert as he has lived here most of his life. His many friends sympathize with the aged parents who have lived at Hagansport for years. Mrs. Albert Ottinger and three young daughters have moved to her brothers near Commerce.
