Portion from Best of New Orleans Article March 1, 2010 by Blake Pontchartrain:

Sara Lavinia Todd Hyams, wife of Chapman Hyams, died in New York in September 1914 of undisclosed causes not yellow fever. She and her husband were very close and traveled extensively in America where they obtained a large collection of art treasures. The couple were traveling in Europe when the war broke out, and they were able to make their way to Liverpool and return to America. Ms. Hyams had been in poor health since leaving Europe, and three weeks later she died and was temporarily interred.

In her will, Ms. Hyams left a rare collection of paintings and art treasures valued at several hundred thousand dollars to the Delgado Museum. She also asked that her jewels be sold and the proceeds used to construct fountains and wading pools in Audubon Park and City Park.
