Stanley - Pfc. Harry Lee Freeman, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Freeman of this village died in Fitzsimmons General Hospital at Denver, Col., early today as a result of gunshot wounds.
Telegram received by the parents today from the Department of the Army said their son "died of gunshot wounds sustained in the line of duty".
The Times learned from the Associated Press in Denver that the victim was accidentally shot in the abdomen by a fellow soldier. Both were military policemen and had just been returning from taking a detail of prisoners back from the guardhouse.
The Associated Press said that Pvt. Ross C. Dooley, 19, of Tallulah, La., was returning his gun to arsenal when the accident occurred. Capt. John A. Alley Jr., provost marshal, said that Dooley is being held while Lowry field officials investigated. Dooley was charged with careless handle of firearms.
The victim died five hours after the shooting, the Associated Press reported.
Earlier, the parents had received a telegram saying that their son had been seriously hurt in an accident. No details had been supplied.
Pvt. Freeman had enlisted in the Army Air Forces over a year ago. He trained first in Texas, then was sent to Lowry Field. He was home on furlough this summer, and had expected to return home for Christmas with his family.
He had attended Gorham Central school and the Stanley Methodist church.
Surviving are his parents, one brother, Philip at home, his grandparents, Mrs. Pearl Freeman of Alba, Pa., and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Frarey of Stanley.
