SOUTHAMPTON — A 17-year-old Cherokee High School student was killed and another student was injured this morning in a single-vehicle accident on Route 70, state police said.
Anthony Farrace of Evesham died this morning after the 9:07 a.m. accident on Route 70 near Burr's Mill Road, said Sgt. Stephen Jones, spokesman for the New Jersey State Police.
Farrace was a passenger in a 1997 Mercedes E320 driven by a 17-year-old Evesham girl, Jones said.
Jones said witnesses reported the vehicle was driving eastbound and passing other vehicles when the girl lost control. The Mercedes veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree, he said.
The vehicle struck the tree on the passenger side and Farrace became trapped in the wreckage. He was cut free by firefighters and paramedics and then taken by ambulance to Virtua Memorial Hospital Burlington County in Mount Holly, where he was pronounced dead, Jones said.
The Mercedes' driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Her identity was not released due to an ongoing investigation, Jones said.
Both Farrace and the girl attended Cherokee High School, where Farrace was a varsity football player and wrestler. Both recently completed their junior years.
Jones said an investigation into the accident is ongoing. No charges had been filed as of this afternoon.
