Death of Henry Monroe, Sr.
Henry Monroe, Sr. died at his home in Fairview Sunday afternoon, aged 90 years, 5 months and 29 days. He had been a great sufferer for several years. Mr. Monroe was born in County Down, Ireland, July 12, 1823. When about 18 years of age he came to the United States and made his home in New York. As a young man he traveled over much of the country and especially through the south. December 25, 1855, he was married to Mary Laughlin, of near Brooklin, Poweschich county, Iowa. May 10, 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Monroe came to Kansas and settled on the farm west of Fairview, now occupied by their son, Henry. Here he lived and labored and saw the country develop from the prairie to a splendid farming community. Twenty-two years ago he moved to town and retired from the activities of life. At the time of his death, Mr. Monroe had been in America 72 years, in Kansas nearly 58 years and had shared the joys and sorrows of life with his beloved companion for more than 58 years. He was the father of ten children four of whom have preceded him n death. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his departure, four daughters, Mrs. S. P. Jones of Kansas City, Mrs. W. E. skinner and Mrs. W. A. Yearing of Denver and Mrs. Chas, O'Roke of Fairview, two sons, William and Henry, Jr., of Fairview, twenty-one grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Mr. Monroe was a kind and loving husband and father and a good citizen—ever ready to help the poor and needy. The funeral services were held at the Reformed Church Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. W. Bechtel. Interment was made in the Sabetha Cemetery.
