Elsie Steele Wood, 100, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012. A worship service in celebration of her life will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 at Flint Hill United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dee Dowdy and Rev. Mike Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery on Hwy 29 in Elmore County near Titus at 2:30 p.m.

Mrs. Wood was born on Sept. 9, 1911 in Coosa County to William Jackson Steele and Mary Beatrice Sims Steele. She was educated at Troy Normal School and taught at Richville in the early 1930's. She later earned a degree in Special Education at Auburn University and taught in the Alexander City School System, retiring in 1978. She was a member and officer of Alpha Delta Kappa education honorary. Retired and senior volunteers, and the Alabama and Tallapoosa County Education Retirees Associations. She was a highly honored to be selected by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority as First Lady of Alexander City for 1981. She enjoyed her church, playing the piano, traveling, teaching Sunday School and cooking. She was a member of Flint Hill United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil Loring Wood; son Berry Jackson Wood; daughter, Cecil Ann Wood; 8 sisters, Lizzie Guy, Annie Kelley, Era Ward, Nina Hardy, Elra Hardy, Sallie Johnson, Zora Guy, and Mozelle Fielding; 2 brothers, Thomas Steele and Oliver Steele.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Wood Perry and husband, Wiley B.Perry, Jr.; nieces and nephews and their families.

The family will accept flowers, but would prefer donations be made to Flint Hill United Methodist Church, Alexander City, AL or to Amedisys Hospice, Montgomery, AL or the charity of one's choice.

Radney Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.
