Evangelist, author and founder of the Teen Challenge movement. Wrote the best-selling book "The Cross and the Switchblade."
Wilkerson founded Times Square Church in New York City and was the focus of the book and a resulting movie.
Wilkerson married Gwendolyn Carosso, June 14, 1952. Together they founded Teen Challenge in 1960. The goal of Teen Challenge is to help troubled youth and adults, particularly those with life-controlling problems due to drugs or alcohol. A little over a decade later, he founded an expanded version of this outreach called World Challenge.
An active evangelist to the last, he was killed in East Texas when his car struck an 18-wheeler.
