Steward was married twice, first) 30 Nov 1854 to Lucinda Springer, daughter of Daniel and Jane Jones Springer. Lucinda died in childbirth or soon after the birth of their second child in 1857 and is buried in Ohio; second) 20 Feb 1859 to Susanna Gaver, daughter of John and Margaret Richter Gaver. They had eight children.
