Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. He enlisted in Company C, 8th Michigan Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1861. He received a disability discharge after being severly wounded at the Battle of Secessionville near James Island, S.C. on June 16, 1862.
Upon his death, his will specified that after paying his burial expenses, the balance of his estate was donated to purchase the Civil War soldier monument that now stands above the GAR plot where he rests.
