Joseph Vaculik was born in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. In 1891, at the age of 7, he immigrated to the United States with his mother Mary Mikas Vaculik. His father was already in the United States, having immigrated in 1890. Joseph and his mother left from Bremen, Germany, with a stop in Southampton, England, on the ship "Ems", arriving in New York City on October 28, 1891. According to the passenger list, their destination was Illinois.
However, the family ended up in Fayette County, Texas, where Joseph's father farmed. Joseph grew up there and followed his father as a farmer.
On November 4, 1907, Joseph married Eva Fiedler, the daughter of Roman and Mary Fiedler, another Bohemian family that had immigrated to the United States in 1888 and settled in Fayette County.
Joseph and Eva had 11 children. Son Frank died at age 10 of a respiratory infection. Daughter Julie died at age 7 from injuries received when she was struck by a hit-and-run driver while the children were walking home from school. Son Emil Edwin died within a few days of his birth in 1924.
Joseph died in 1928, leaving Eva a widow with eight children at home, the youngest only 3 years old.
Four sons, Bill, Adolph, Jerry and Bennie, served in the United States Army during World War II. Son Jerry was killed in action in France on July 23, 1944.
Eva lived the remainder of her life in the family home near Engle in Fayette County.
