Major League Baseball Player. He was one of the best all around baseball players of the game's 19th Century era and the first American Jew to gain national fame as a sports icon. As an infielder and outfielder, he made his Major League debut with the Troy Haymakers on May 9, 1871. For ten seasons, he played for the Troy Haymakers (1871), Baltimore Canaries (1872-73), Hartford Dark Blues (1874), St. Louis Brown Stockings (1874-75), Cincinnati Reds (1877-78), Worcester Ruby Legs (1881) and New York Metropolitans (1887). He was the National Association Home Run Champion, (1871-73) and National League Home Run Champion, (1877). He concluded his career with 638 hits, 434 runs scored, 106 home runs, 664 runs batted in, a .322 batting average and a .840 fielding percentage. He died of heart disease at the age of 48 and was the first Jewish baseball player to be inducted into the International Jewish Baseball Hall of Fame. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
