Actor. Director. National League Umpire. His Broadway career extended from 1898 until 1927. He was elected to the Lamb's Club in 1895. As a National League baseball umpire, he considered determining whether a runner was tagged or not a challenge. He wanted to be close to the action as it took place. He began to wear spiked shoes and would take up his position behind the pitcher in the center of the diamond. Sometimes as the runner rounded the bases, Barnum would run with him. He was quoted as saying, "I was there; I saw it distinctly." Other umpires soon began wearing spikes and running too. He starred in five silent films including The Mountain Woman, Sherlock Brown, Minnie, and Man Alone. He was the husband of actress Tillie Barnum. He was a resident of the Edwin Forrest Home.
