John C. Brown was enlisted on June 4, 1861, at Ashville, Alabama, for the war. Although he was absent sick for many battles, he was present at a number of battles, including Yorktown; Williamsburg; Harpers Ferry; Chancellorsville; Salem Church; Gettysburg; Bristol Station; Mine Run; Sharpsburg. Pvt. Brown was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 4 on February 22, 1863, with catarrh, and returned to duty on March 6, 1863. He deserted to the enemy while on picket, April 17, 1864. He was charged as a Rebel deserter and sent to Washington DC on April 20, where he took the Oath of Allegiance, and was transferred to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
