He was married to Elizabeth Chapman Hunter, daughter of General John Chapman Hunter. He was the son of William Davidson Jr. and his wife, Jinny. He was the father of four sons: John, Hunter, Roger and Charles. His widow married a Dr. Pope and lived in Georgia.

His son, Hunter Davidson, was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. During the Civil War Hunter Davidson was the Confederate officer in charge of armament when the CSS Virginia engaged with the USS Monitor in 1862.
