Rene Cook, 66, long time resident of the Fort Benton area, died at the Chouteau County District Hospital here Sunday August 17, 1975. Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 10:30 at the Benton Funeral Home with Reverend Chet Shaw of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with military honors by the VFW.
Mr. Cook was born August 10, 1909, at Blairsville, Georgia, and came to Montana in 1928 when the Cook family settled in this area. He farmed in the Montague area until he entered the service in 1942. He served in Europe with the 32nd regiment of the 3rd armored division, participating in the battles of northern France, Belgium, Ardennes and Germany to the Elbe. His battalion received the Presidential Unit Citation for action in the Siegried Line breakthrough, and Rene received the Bronze Star as a halftrack driver.
After the war he returned to farming here and married Esther Flom Doney in Havre in September of 1946. The couple resided at the ranch until they moved to Fort Benton in 1950. He continued to operate the ranch until his death. Mrs. Cook died February 10, 1969.
Survivors are sons Dennis Cook of Fort Benton and Lee Doney of Great Falls; daughters, Mrs. Mae Raber of Anoka, Minnesota, and Mrs. Christine Feltz of Fort Benton; a brother, Oscar Cook and sister Mrs. Pauline Poindexter, both of Fort Benton and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Merle Dewar and brothers Ira Cook and Cecil Cook.
