Peter was likely the son of Jacob Pound (born circa 1814) . Some sources state Joanna Crider - who seems to have died around 1850 - was his mother. Other sources list Mahala Redmond, who may have married Jacob Pound after the death of his first wife.

He has not been found enumerated on the 1850 census, which was done in November of 1850. In 1860, he lived with Lewis and Mary Goodwin. Mary Goodwin was the sister of Mahala Redmond. Very little is truly known of his early life.

His first wife was Lucy Younginer, who died in the 1880s. He later married Hattie Odell Hallman.

His children with Lucy were: Fred, Jacob, Minnie, Barbara, John, and Butler.

His children with Hattie were: Octavia, Lee, Elsie, Myrtie, WInnie, Duffie, Darby, and Lillie.
