Susan Frances Andrews, 65, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, in Fort Worth. Memorial service: 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Worth. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hurst Public Library in memory of Susan Andrews, 901 Precinct Line Road, Hurst, Texas 76053. Susan Frances Andrews of North Richland Hills was born July 6, 1948, in Houston to Ralph Lowery Andrews and Nadine Allison Andrews. She grew up in Bellaire, where she graduated from Bellaire High School. Susan attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., graduating with a BA in radio-television-film. In 1972, she earned a master of library science from the University of Texas at Austin, after which Susan moved to Garland and began working for the Dallas Public Library System. She developed an interest in traditional oral storytelling and joined the Tejas Storytelling Association and the National Storytelling Association and was an active participant in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, singing in the chorus. In 1992, she became the library director for the Veterans Memorial Library in Lancaster. When the library was partly destroyed by a tornado in 1994, Susan worked tirelessly with the architect, the city staff, volunteers and a host of others to rebuild and improve the library. She received the Library Director of the Year Award from the Northeast Texas Library System in 1999. In 2001, she became the library director for the city of Hurst. With her oversight, the library held multiple programs including the Summer Reading Club, Masterworks Concert Series, Story Time, Celebration of Cultures, and Patron Appreciation. She was also instrumental in creating the Art in Public Places Program for the city of Hurst. She was particularly proud of the placing of the bronze sculpture "Poems & Promises" in front of the library. During her tenure in Hurst, the library was recognized with eight major Achievement of Excellence Awards by the Texas Municipal Library Director Association. Susan was an active member of the American Association of University Women and belonged to numerous library associations. Susan brought joy and love and laughter to everyone who crossed her path. Her humor, intelligence and enthusiasm for everything made her an indefatigable conversationalist. When one asked Susan a question, one needed to be prepared for the complete answer and then some. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues. Susan was predeceased by her parents. Survivors: She is survived by her sister, Julia A. Smith and husband, Pliny C. Smith, M.D., of Houston; niece, Anne A. Smith of Fort Worth; nephew, Pliny A. Smith of Chicago, Ill.; great-niece and great-nephew, Gillian and Jason Smith of Chicago; and dear cousins and friends too numerous to name.
