Fred H. Cariker Jr., 84, of Amarillo died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Clifton Mann and the Rev. Jo Roberts Mann officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Fred H. Cariker Jr., 84, went to be with his Savior on Aug. 6, 2009. Fred, known as "Tug," was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Childress. He graduated from Childress High School, attended the University of Texas at Austin and received business degrees from West Texas State University and Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served with the 925th Aviation Engineers in the European theater in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the EAME Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and received four overseas service bars and a good conduct medal.
He married Shirley Schroeder on June 9, 1951, in San Antonio, and they moved to Amarillo in July 1951. He was owner of Amarillo Auto Salvage and co-owner of A&A Transmission Service and Amarillo Crushing Co.
Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. His passions included serving others and spending time with family and friends. He was a man of strong morals and values and could be counted on to stand by his word. Fred was generous with his time, talents and assets.
Fred was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Fred H. Cariker and Edith Confer Cariker.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley; two daughters, Edie Carter and husband Clay and their children, Elizabeth and Coleman of Amarillo, and Helen Shelton and husband Bob and their children, Susie and Robert of Midland; a brother, Joe W. Cariker of West Columbia; a niece; four nephews; and his lifelong business partner and confidant, Trine Villarreal.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Fred Cariker Memorial Fund,, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1601 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, TX 79102; Scholarship Fund, St. Andrew's Episcopal School, 1515 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, TX 79102; or a favorite charity.
