LAKE MEREDITH - The body of Earnest Eugene Finck, 35, of Amarillo was discovered by a group of youths about 9 a.m. today in the Blue West area on the north side of Lake Meredith.
Finck had been missing at the lake since about 9:30 p.m. Friday night when he and a friend jumped from a small boat, which was filling with water.
National Park Service officials took the man's body to the Cedar Canyon boat launching ramp where Finck was pronounced dead about 10 a.m. by Justice of the Peace G.H. Turpin of Borger.
Park Rangers said the body was discovered by a group of youths working in the Park Service Neighborhood Youth Corps program. The NYC group was on a barge in the Blue West area when they saw the body floating next to the shore and called park rangers.
Finck disappeared Friday night when he and James Whitman of Amarillo went out in a 10-foot fishing boat from their camp in Harbor Bay. Winds caused high waves to begin washing over the small boat, said Whitman. Both men then jumped into the water and were separated. Finck was not seen again by his companion.
When park rangers reached the location where the man's body washed ashore they said they saw that a portion of the man's life jacket was still on Finck. They said the life jacket was the size used by children.
Finck's body was taken by the Fritch Ambulance to Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors in Amarillo where funeral arrangements are pending.
Whitman, 308 N. Carolina, in Amarillo, reported the incident about 7:30 a.m. Saturday after wandering in the hills near Harbor Bay all night. Both men were wearing life jackets, according to Whitman, when they jumped from the 10-foot aluminum fishing boat.
Park rangers extensively searched in the area since Saturday and had previously located a life jacket.
Whitman told park rangers that shortly after they left their camp to go fishing, high winds began washing waves over their boat.
"I guess Earnest got scared and then just jumped out of the boat," Whitman told newsmen earlier this week. He said about 15 minutes later he jumped from the boat too, when he heard his friend calling for help.
The boat drifted away from the men and soon they became separated too. The boat was found Saturday morning on the north shore of the lake.
The two men were on a weekend outing with their families when the incident occurred.
Finck was an employe of Sid Stout Ford. He came to Amarillo from Bull Head City, Ariz.
He was a graduate of Los Angeles High School and the Los Angeles Junior College.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, and a son, Dane, 4.
