Union Organizer. Louis Tikas, born Ilias Anastasios Spantidakis, was the main labor union organizer at the Ludlow strike camp during a 14-month coal strike in southern Colorado. In 1912 he became an organizer for the United Mine Workers of America. On April 20, 1914, after 14 months of tension between mine owners and striking miners, the National Guard had taken up a position on a nearby hill. Fearing something was about to happen, striking miners began to arm themselves when shots were heard. It is still unknown who fired the first shot but by the end of the day 19 people were dead including two women, 11 children and one Guardsman and the strikers camp was a burning pile of rubble. Louis was meeting with Major Hamrock at the time the shooting started. He left the meeting and ran for the camp while waving a white handkerchief saying that he was going to stop the fighting. Toward the evening hours the camp caught fire and Louis realized the he had to get the women and child out. He went over to the National Guard line waving a big white flag but was captured and taken to Lt Karl Linderfelt. Linderfelt smashed his rifle over the head of Louis breaking the butt of the gun. Louis was later found with three bullets in him and it was determined that he had bled to death. Louis's story and the Ludlow Massacre have been recorded in poems, songs and books and to this day is remembered by unionized labor.
