|Birth: ||Dec. 27, 1885, Canada|
|Death: ||Jan. 27, 1943|
My grandfather, Thomas Townsend Duffins', stepfather. James was my step great grandfather. I never met him but I hear he was a great man.
I don't know much about James other than he was born in Canada and his mother's maiden name was Thompson.
I also know that James was 35 years old when he registered for the WW1 draft. James registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. He was living at P.O. Box 58, Coalinga, Fresno County, Ca. at the time of his registration. His occupation was listed as that of a fireman for the Nevada Pet Co. in Coalinga. It is remarkable to say that he was not an American citizen, but a British citizen, at the time of his draft registration.
He listed his nearest living relative as Valentine Watkins of Graves End (probably Gravesend), England at the time of his WW1 registration.
At the time of the 1940 U.S Census, James was married to my G Grandmother, Martha and living in the unincorporated area of Valley Acres-Line 14, Standard Oil lease 27-G, Judicial Twp 7, Kern Co., Ca. He was at this time an Engineer for a Standard Oil pumping plant, rented his home and had an annual income of $1,932.00.
James was a rather short man with a slender build, brown eyes and black hair.
My grandfather loved him so much and always spoke highly of him. My brother is named after him.
James died at the fairly young age of 57. It's too bad...I would have loved to have known him.
