Converse County, Wyoming mortuary records and an article in the Douglas Budget, Douglas, Wyoming, March 17, 1921 show that Roy's full name is John Roy Shurtz. He was born at Hill City, Kansas on Dec. 23, 1890, the son of Charles F. Shurtz and Sara Cesforss [Serfoss] Shurtz. He and his wife, Julia Claire, were murdered in their home eight miles south of Lost Springs, Wyoming; and their bodies consumed in their burning home. He and his wife were married at Logan, Kansas on September 17, 1919, coming to their home here at that time. There were no children. Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Sarah E. Shurtz of Denver, and two sisters, one living at Elsie, Nebraska and the other in Denver. (Information provided by Betty Alberts, FAG Member #47293729.)
