John V. Gers, 86, of Inverness, FL, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2010, while staying with his loving family in Manahawkin, NJ. Born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, John supported the war effort fabricating PT Boats at ELCO Boat Works. In 1985, he retired to Florida after a 34-year-long career as a warehouse manager for Western Electric in Kearny, NJ. John was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Inverness, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was an active volunteer to the Helping Hands Thrift Store and proudly called bingo for many years. John was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus, heavily involved with fundraising activities and community functions.
John was preceded in death by Jane, his first wife of 25 years, and by Stella, his second wife of 32 years. He is survived by his four children, John F., Genie Lyons, David and Gregory; two grandchildren, Brian and Kristine; his sister, Adele Gull; stepson, Ken Fisher; stepson-in-law, Bob Nagri; step-grandson Greg Nagri; step-great-granddaughters, Michelle and Valerie Nagri: and several nieces and nephews.
John's family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Heinz Funeral Home, 2507 Hwy. 44 West, Inverness, FL. The Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will begin at 5:15 p.m. and Father Johnson will begin a vigil service at 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Inverness.
