Archie Ward Hatcher, 90, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Prairie Village Healthcare Center.

Mr. Hatcher was born July 23, 1921, in Fremont County, IA to Frank and Lula Mae (Judd) Hatcher. He grew up a farm boy in Southwestern Iowa during the 1920's and the Great Depression. Archie served in the US Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. He lived in the Kansas City, MO area in the 1950's before meeting Nelle Baptist. They later married in Jacksonville on July 11, 1960, and were married 39 years before her death on December 20, 1999.

Archie and Nelle raised their family in Manchester while he worked at the Woodson Grain Elevator. He would start the walk from Manchester to Woodson every morning, but would never fail to find a ride along the way from a friend or a helpful motorist. He retired upon the closing of the elevator but continued to do odd jobs into his 70's for local farmers in the Greene and Scott county area, including his friend, the late Earl Hawkins. He was a quiet man who liked keeping himself busy, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and sitting on the porch to relax.

He is survived by a son, Ronnie Hatcher; two daughters, Carolyn (Jeff) Hepworth and Sarah Hatcher, all of Jacksonville; two step-sons, Donald Fisher of Jacksonville and David Fisher of Galesburg, IL; five step-grandchildren; a grandson, Talbot (Stephany Nicholson) Fisher of Galesburg; and three great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren, also of Galesburg; and a brother, Alfred, of California. Archie was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers Benjamin, Roy and Floyd; sisters Lula Mae Davis and Leona Shewey; as well as a stillborn son.

Burial will be in Pine Tree Cemetery near Patterson at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family. Condolences may be left at www.buchanancody.com. Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home and Crematory in Jacksonville is in charge of arrangements.
